Both the aroma and taste feature a complex blend of mint, pine, citrus, anise, with a bold, warm finish. Monk is derived from a recipe for Chartreuse that was published in France contemporaneously with the registration of the Chartreuse brand. The French manuscript was translated into English in 1871 and “has been selected by scholars as being culturally important and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.” Monk is complex. Slightly sweet with an herbal and vegetal flavor profile that features Lemon Balm, Hyssop, Peppermint, Mugwort, Tansy, Flower of Arnica and other herbs, roots and botanicals. Monk can be sipped “neat” but is most often used in cocktails. Classic cocktail recipes that include Monk are Last Word, Bijou and The Green Ghost. Monk shares the same ABV, sugar concentration, flavor profile and color as Green Chartreuse. Use Monk 1:1 in any recipe that calls for Green Chartreuse.
